The conference aims at identifying and sharing best practices on enabling access of persons with disabilities at workspaces and educational institutions through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and other interventions, and to bring together the key players in this field in deliberating on and showcasing solutions and enabling technologies.
Over 400 stakeholder representatives and key decision makers from higher education institutions; related government departments, corporations, researchers, entrepreneurs and NGOs working on inclusion and diversity agendas, apart from trade bodies and persons with disabilities.

Americans gave about two hundred ninety billion dollars to charity last year. That was ten billion dollars more than the amount of charitable giving in two thousand nine. The estimates are from the Giving USA Foundation and its research partner, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Charities are nonprofit organizations that raise money to provide social services or other programs. Giving USA has been reporting on charitable donations since nineteen fifty-six. The group estimates that about seventy-five million households gave to at least one charitable organization in the United States last year. A household is one or more people living in a home. The largest share of charitable giving goes to religious groups. Giving USA says they received thirty-five percent of all donations in twenty-ten. Some people give a percentage of their pay to religious organizations. Schools and other education-related organizations were second on the list. They received an estimated fourteen percent of all charitable giving last year. The federal tax agency, the Internal Revenue Service, recognizes donations to official charities. Those who give to charity may be able to get tax breaks and reduce the amount of taxes they owe. People who give to charity may want to know how their donations are being spent. Organizations like Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy look at how charities spend the money they receive. Their reports and ratings offer a measure of how effectively the charities use their money. For example, donors can learn how much a group spends on services, compared to how much it spends on itself in administrative costs. Charity Navigator recently asked donors and charities to answer questions about year-end giving trends this year. More than five hundred donors and one hundred charities completed the questionnaire. On average, these charities said they received forty-one percent of all their donations in the last few weeks of the year. Charity Navigator also asked donors about the kinds of charities they would likely support this holiday season. Human services rated at the top of the list. The Centre for Services and Information on Disability is the winner of the Stars Foundation impact education award for its work to end the stigma of disability in Bangladesh. The Dhaka-based centre works with some of the most marginalised children and young people in Bangladesh, offering them access to education and employment, and promoting their inclusion in society.
CSID received a STARS Foundation Impact Award for its pioneering work with disabled children amongst some of the poorest communities in Bangladesh.
The challenge
In Bangladesh, where over 20 per cent of the population is disabled, only 4 per cent of disabled children are estimated to be accessing basic education, recreation and leisure activities, and at least 80 per cent live in low-income families. This marginalised group is excluded from mainstream development plans, both within government and the NGO sector. As a result, many of these children face a life stigmatised and shamed of their disability, or forced to work on the streets as a source of income for their families.
The response
Centre for Services and Information on Disability (CSID) fights for the inclusion of disabled people in society and promotes their equal rights. CSID targets the most vulnerable children within this marginalised group, such as those living on the streets in slums and in rural areas, as well as those with severe degrees of disability and/or with no access to education and recreation activities.
To overcome social exclusion and discrimination, CSID works closely with the school authorities, local government, community and businesses to provide access to health and rehabilitation services, education, recreation, vocational training and decent employment. CSID also aims to influence national policy and legislation so that it is more reflective and representative of the rights of disabled people and children.
The result
CSID have enhanced the mobility and functional ability of over 900 disabled children who now participate in CSID’s programmes. Following attendance at CSID operated pre-school centres, where children with and without disabilities learn together, 650 disabled children have been enrolled in mainstream schools, with a 95 per cent retention rate. In addition, seven self-advocacy groups of disabled children have been created, and the government is steadily changing its approach to disability, evidenced by the introduction of an education stipend for children with disabilities and the incorporation of disability issues in National Education Policy. A marked increase in wider community acceptance and interaction has also been noted, as well as higher levels of accountability and care within families.

The Museum of disABILITY History’s newest exhibit, “War and disABILITY,” focuses on the social perception, care and treatment of veterans who are disabled throughout history. This exhibit examines the American military and disability experience in terms of medical and military technology, legislation regarding veterans, the psychiatric effects of combat, pop-culture and disability, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, traumatic brain injury and the contributions of individuals with disabilities in times of national need. From the Revolutionary War to the ongoing Afghan Theater of operations, the topics of War and disABILITY are often in close quarters.

I almost didn’t post this. It’s really scary opening up and sharing my weakness with people. But I know that it can help some of you who are going through a similar experience.
