Religion Gets Largest Share of Charity in US

0 Religion Gets Largest Share of Charity in USThis is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish

Americans gave about two hundred ninety billion dollars to charity last year. That was ten billion dollars more than the amount of charitable giving in two thousand nine. The estimates are from the Giving USA Foundation and its research partner, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Charities are nonprofit organizations that raise money to provide social services or other programs. Giving USA has been reporting on charitable donations since nineteen fifty-six. The group estimates that about seventy-five million households gave to at least one charitable organization in the United States last year. A household is one or more people living in a home. The largest share of charitable giving goes to religious groups. Giving USA says they received thirty-five percent of all donations in twenty-ten. Some people give a percentage of their pay to religious organizations. Schools and other education-related organizations were second on the list. They received an estimated fourteen percent of all charitable giving last year. The federal tax agency, the Internal Revenue Service, recognizes donations to official charities. Those who give to charity may be able to get tax breaks and reduce the amount of taxes they owe. People who give to charity may want to know how their donations are being spent. Organizations like Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy look at how charities spend the money they receive. Their reports and ratings offer a measure of how effectively the charities use their money. For example, donors can learn how much a group spends on services, compared to how much it spends on itself in administrative costs. Charity Navigator recently asked donors and charities to answer questions about year-end giving trends this year. More than five hundred donors and one hundred charities completed the questionnaire. On average, these charities said they received forty-one percent of all their donations in the last few weeks of the year. Charity Navigator also asked donors about the kinds of charities they would likely support this holiday season. Human services rated at the top of the list. Arts, culture and humanities rated at the bottom. For VOA Special English, I’m Alex Villarreal. Tony Bennett Releasing Amy Winehouse Duet for Charity

0 Tony Bennett Releasing Amy Winehouse Duet for Charityhttp://on.fb.me/loxDu6 – Facebook Fan Page! http://bit.ly/ClevverMusic – Click to Subscribe to ClevverMusic!
Hi there, I’m Bridget Daly, your host for ClevverMusic. Tony Bennett is celebrating his 85th birthday today, and not only did he get a special birthday message from Lady Gaga, but he also announced some really cool news. The musical icon told the Today Show that he intends on releasing a duet he did Amy Winehouse as a single for charity. Tony and Amy collaborated on the track Body and Soul, which marks the last known recording before her death last month. He said, “What’s going to happen is that we’re putting that out ahead of the album. And it’s going to a foundation that her father started to teach all the young children not to take drugs, and all the royalties of the record will go to that.” Tony added, “That’s right, that was the last record she made. It was great. She sang beautifully.”
The album Bennett is referring to is the follow-up to his 2006 release, Duet: An American Classic, entitled Duets 2. It’s set for a Sept. 20 release on Columbia Records, and will also feature duets with Mariah Carey, Michael Buble and Norah Jones.Pretty amazing news, and we love the fact that the proceeds of the Tony-Amy duet will go to such a special charity. Let us know if you intend on downloading the single once it’s released, and for more music news, make sure to follow us on Twitter @clevvermusic. I’m Bridget Daly, signing off. Thanks for watching.

Unequal Treatment Drives Disability Rights Movement

0 Unequal Treatment Drives Disability Rights MovementThis is the VOA Special English Health Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish

New estimates show that more than one billion people have a physical or mental disability. Experts say almost one-fifth of them experience serious difficulties in their daily lives as a result of their disability. And disability rates are increasing as populations get older and more people get long-term conditions, like heart disease and diabetes. The estimates are in a report from the World Health Organization and the World Bank. The World Report on Disability says few countries do enough to meet the needs of the disabled. They face problems like discrimination and a lack of health care and other services. They have higher poverty rates and lower education levels than other people. This is true in both rich and poor countries. Cindy Lewis is the director of programs for an organization called Mobility International USA. Ms. Lewis says people with disabilities helped write the new report. One of its messages is that people with disabilities should not only receive services — they should also help design and provide them. Ms. Lewis says that way they can become decision makers and policy makers. “People with disabilities are a huge and untapped resource for governments, communities [and] development programs. And that is a big problem that we are working on addressing.” Ms. Lewis says in many countries, people with disabilities are organizing to support disability rights. “It’s a very incorrect assumption that people with disabilities are in their community sitting around passively waiting for something good to happen. People with disabilities around the world are getting together and mobilizing and speaking out.” Her group is working with the United States Agency for International Development. The projects bring together disability groups and development organizations in Colombia, Jordan and Ethiopia. The United Nations has a human rights treaty called the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Almost one hundred fifty governments and regional organizations have signed it.The World Health Organization and the World Bank say people with disabilities should be able to use the same services as everyone else. They call for more laws to give the disabled the same rights and chances to succeed as everyone else. These laws, they say, will help the public understand that people with disabilities also have abilities. For VOA Special English, I’m Alex Villarreal. For more stories, go to voaspecialenglish.com.
